LISTEN: Is Passenger Rail Socialized Transportation?

There’s no doubt that alternative transportation needs to be beefed up in this country. When you take a look at the passenger rail infrastructure of other developed nations around the world, Amtrak looks simultaneously sad and laughable.

In the twentieth century, the political will to forego highway expansions in favor of rail simply did not exist. As we crest the peak oil wave here in the coming second decade of the twenty-first century, it’s become pretty obvious that alternative energy, and alternative transportation along with it, needs to become a much higher priority.

JM: Transportation is a public good, and if you factor in all the costs of the infrastructure and, you know, the trains, everything like that, it… No form of transportation is a money-maker, but that’s really not the purpose. The purpose of transportation is to move people and to move goods, and economic benefit flows out of that.
