From one of the foremost experts on slate roofs in the United States today, Joseph Jenkins has completely revised, expanded, and updated The Slate Roof Bible into a third edition, including more than a decade’s worth of additional experience, research and information

Joseph Jenkins climbed on his first slate roof in 1968, authored the first edition of The Slate Roof Bible in 1997, and published the second edition in 2003. Both editions received national awards. Jenkins is still very active in the slate roofing industry.

The third edition, hardbound, completely updates and expands the material in the second edition, with more emphasis on the craft of slate roof installation. Expanded sections include slate siding, eyebrow dormers, turrets, soldering, flashings, international slate, American slate history, slating styles, installation and repair tips, and trade secrets. Dozens of new color photographs have been added, as well as step-by-step illustrations and line drawings.

The Slate Roof Bible belongs on the shelf of every architect, roofer, slate roof owner, architectural consultant, history buff, and anyone in the roofing industry.

The Slate Roof Bible is a fine book, filled with fascinating information about slate: its history, the industry, and the way to work with it properly.”—Fine Homebuilding

About Joseph C. Jenkins

Born in Germany in 1952 to American parents, Joseph Jenkins has become a respected voice in sustainable living and ecological innovation. After earning a science degree in 1974, Jenkins took an unconventional path-spending the entire 1980s living off the grid, without electricity or running water. It was during this period of radical simplicity that he developed a groundbreaking, waterless toilet system: hygienic, odor-free, and designed to turn human waste into fertile soil. What began as a graduate thesis evolved into The Humanure Handbook, first published in 1995 and now in its fourth edition-an award-winning, self-published guide that’s earned global acclaim. Jenkins continues to write, publish, and travel the world, sharing his insights through several non-fiction titles. To learn more, visit josephjenkins.com.
