LISTEN: R. J. Ruppenthal on Raising Your Own Food in Lean Times

Posted By dpacheco On February 6, 2009 @ 11:46 am In Food & Health | No Comments

The February 3 edition of Your Own Health and Fitness [1] on California’s KPFA radio station (on the web at KPFA.org) featured author R. J. Ruppenthal [2]. He spoke to Layna Berman about raising a portion of your own food during this economic downturn, even if you live in a cramped urban apartment, by using creative methods to get the most out of your small space. Ruppenthal’s book is Fresh Food from Small Spaces: The Square-Inch Gardener’s Guide to Year-Round Growing, Fermenting, and Sprouting [3].

A recent article in the news warned consumers that the lack of rain in California will lead to increased food prices. Where does it end? A financial crisis that threatens to erase the middle class, global warming, and now a drought? Bad news.

But all this bad news is giving rise to a movement by people taking control of their consumption habits and finding creative ways to get by. One way is by growing food. Everywhere. Community gardens are sprouting up in urban landscapes, backyards, and even on tiny balconies.

Today’s guest has experience from years of hard work, success, and failure. The result: a book he wishes he had when he had started. Join us today to learn how to raise “Fresh Food from Small Spaces.”
