Martin Melaver is an ethical businessman with a few simple goals: to live his life and manage his third-generation family business according to a set of core values; to serve his community, which means developing existing structures—what’s known as in-fill—rather than creating all new structures on virgin land; and to share these beliefs and values with the business community so that other businesses can follow in the Melavers’ footsteps.
In this podcast from WritersCast, Martin talks about his ethical business philosophy, his family business’s journey from corner grocery to real estate developer, and his book, Living Above the Store: Building a Business That Creates Value, Inspires Change, and Restores Land and Community.

I am a boutique real estate business and have barely survived these past three years.
I built a mixed use building in 2005 and run my business out of there, have a couple of commercial clients and a few apartments upstairs.
This year, I sold my house and am moving into the building. I had this great idea to write an article to my sphere of 1200 people titling it “Living Above the Store.” Just for kicks, I thought I would google those words and see what turned up and you did.
Not sure I can wait until May 2010 and obviously some folks have your book so if you have another one - I would be interested. I am excited to see what changes will come about by changing my living space and combining it with my work space. Barb Lamoureux
