WATCH: A Short Video Guide to Urban Homesteading

Meet Novella Carpenter, author of Farm City: The Education of an Urban Farmer. She’s an urban farmer who took over the abandoned lot next door to her apartment to grow vegetables and raise animals like chickens, pigs, goats, and rabbits.
Novella brushes off the notion that she would do better farming some place out in the country. The main advantage? Most of the animals’ food comes from the waste stream. That’s right: dumpster diving. Not to mention urban farming means a massive reduction in food miles (less fossil fuels burned and fewer carbon emissions).
