A TV ad airing in California is calling for the legalization, taxation, and regulation of marijuana for recreational use. The spot is funded in part by the Marijuana Policy Project, a group dedicated to raising awareness about the relative safety of the drug, especially when compared to a more harmful, legal substance—namely, alcohol. Taxing marijuana would bring in an estimated $1.3 billion in revenue—no small potatoes for a state facing a crippling budget crisis.
In this clip, the MPP’s Aaron Houston discusses the pros and cons of legalization with NBC’s Chief Medical Editor Dr. Nancy Snyderman and Dr. Andrea Barthwell, a former Deputy Director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy under George W. Bush. (It should be noted that Dr. Barthwell has a history of disseminating incorrect information about marijuana.)
