Chelsea Green Publishing announced today the September publication of The End of America: A Letter of Warning to a Young Patriot, an impassioned call to return to the aspirations and beliefs of the Founding Fathers. In a stunning indictment of the Bush administration and Congress, Wolf shows how events of the last six years parallel steps taken in the early years of the 20th century's worst dictatorships.

In The End of America, Wolf gives voice to the cause of every American patriot: the preservation of the Constitution and the liberties it embodies and protects.

"Recent history has profound lessons for us in the U.S. today about how fascist, totalitarian, and other repressive leaders seize and maintain power, especially in what were once democracies. The secret is that these leaders all tend to take very similar, parallel steps. The Founders of this nation were so deeply familiar with tyranny and the habits and practices of tyrants that they set up our checks and balances precisely out of fear of what is unfolding today. We are seeing these same kinds of tactics now closing down freedoms in America, turning our nation into something that in the near future could be quite other than the open society in which we grew up and learned to love liberty," stated Wolf.

Like the pamphleteer Tom Paine, she plans to take her message directly to the American people in the most accessible form and as part of a large national campaign to reach out to ordinary Americans about the dangers we face today. Chelsea Green will publish The End of America as a paperback original, priced at $12, and with a first print run of 100,000 copies, available in late July for a September publication date.

The End of America adds to Chelsea Green Publishing's growing reputation as a cutting-edge political publisher. "When we published George Lakoff's Don't Think of an Elephant! Know Your Values and Frame the Debate, a runaway national bestseller, we helped change the way politics is talked about in America; when we published Jerome Armstrong's and Markos Moulitsas' Crashing the Gate: Netroots, Grassroots, and the Rise of People-Powered Politics we helped change the way U.S. political campaigns are run in the 21st century; with the publication of Naomi Wolf's The End of America it's possible that we may help save American Democracy. Take it as hyperbole or not, this is a very important book," stated publisher Margo Baldwin.

Naomi Wolf, born in San Francisco, was an undergraduate at Yale University and completed her graduate work at New College, Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. The Beauty Myth, her first book, was an international bestseller. She followed that with five other books; the most recent, The Treehouse: Eccentric Wisdom from my Father on How to Live, Love and See, was released in May of 2005. Wolf is the co-founder of the Woodhull Institute for Ethical Leadership, an organization devoted to training young women in ethical leadership for the 21st Century. She lives with her family in New York City.

Since its founding in 1984, Chelsea Green Publishing has published over 400 titles focused on the politics and practice of sustainable living. For the past three consecutive years, Chelsea Green has been featured as one of the "Fastest Growing Small Presses" in the country by Publishers Weekly and currently publishes 30 new titles a year, employs 20 full-time staff members, and offers distribution services for over 35 similarly focused small presses. Chelsea Green is headquartered in White River Junction, VT. Margo Baldwin, who co-founded Chelsea Green with her husband Ian Baldwin, is President and Publisher.
