These are the words of marine biologist Riki Ott, comforting an oil spill cleanup worker who has lost an animal to the devastation. Twenty years later, only a handful of species have fully recovered. Half the oil remains buried about a foot beneath the beach’s sand. And the community’s trauma is immeasurable.
