This video touches on the alleged abuses the Monsanto corporation is perpetrating against poor, illiterate farmers in India.
The corporation hires Bollywood actors to persuade farmers to buy seed at ten times the price they’re used to paying. They must then buy pesticides, also sold by Monsanto. The farmers are pushed to their limits by crops from which they aren’t allowed to harvest seed when they inevitably fail from lack of irrigation—Monsanto owns the patents. And when they eventually rack up a crippling amount of debt just to keep from starving, they’re forced to either find some way to pay, or lose their land to the Monsanto corporation—which, by the way, also owns their debt.
In the end, many choose to take their own lives in a way that is shocking, sad, and ultimately fitting: by drinking Monsanto pesticides.
