Seattle spinal surgeon Dr. David Hanscom focuses on an aspect of chronic pain that the medical world has largely overlooked: you must calm your nervous system in order to get better. More than any other book about pain, Back in Control reveals how to quiet a turbocharged central nervous system and make a full recovery, with or without surgery. Dr. Hanscom shares the story of his own journey out of chronic pain and offers a treatment paradigm that has evolved from his personal experience, as well what he has learned from his patients,  hundreds of whom have moved beyond managing pain to becoming pain free. This book will enable those suffering from chronic pain to regain control of their care and life.

This revised 2nd edition reflects the last few years of neuroscience research. It is becoming increasingly clear that the brain processes mental and physical pain in a similar manner. As anxiety drops, pain will diminish. Dr. Hanscom has observed that these principles apply to any chronic pain condition.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

David Hanscom

David Hanscom, MD is an orthopedic spine surgeon who has been performing complex spine surgery since 1986. Much of his practice has been helping patients out of a deep hole caused by multiple failed spine surgeries. He spent the first eight years of his practice focusing on surgical solutions and noticed that surgery alone was rarely successful in accomplishing its goal. He successfully resolved his own chronic pain in 2003 after suffering for 15 years. He began to share his experience with his patients, and by helping his patients address all aspects of chronic pain, including physical conditioning and the central nervous system, he has witnessed many patients become pain free.

Make Mead Like a Viking

By Jereme Zimmerman

Mead. Vikings. It’s impossible to think of one without the other. So why try? In Make Mead Like a Viking, Jereme Zimmerman unlocks the brewing secrets of the ancient Norse and shows readers how homebrewing mead can be not only simple but fun.

As a homesteader, fermentation enthusiast, and self-described “Appalachian Yeti Viking,” Zimmerman embraces the traditional culture and rituals surrounding mead and will help others bring a sense of wildness, mysticism, and individuality to their home-crafted brews.

In this accessible, easy-to-follow guide, readers will learn how to brew their own drinks such as sweet, semi-sweet, and dry meads; melomels (fruit meads); metheglins (spiced meads); Ethiopian t’ej; honey beers; and grog—opening the Mead Hall doors to further experimentation in fermentation and flavor. In addition, aspiring Viking brewers will explore:

  • The importance of local and unpasteurized honey for both flavor and health benefits
  • Why modern homebrewing practices, materials, and chemicals work but aren’t necessary
  • Herbs and wild botanicals for use in flavoring and preserving these healing, nutritious, and magical meads, beers, and wines
  • Recommendations for starting a mead circle to share your wild meads with other brewers as part of the growing wild mead subculture
  • and more

Whether you’ve been intimidated by modern homebrewing’s cost or seeming complexity in the past or are looking to expand your current brewing and fermentation practices, Zimmerman’s welcoming style and spirit will usher you into exciting new territory. Grounded in history and mythology but focused on modern self-sufficiency, Make Mead Like a Viking is a practical and entertaining guide for the ages.

Herbal Formularies for Health Professionals, Volume 2

Herbal Formularies for Health Professionals, Volume 2

By Jill Stansbury

Herbal Formularies for Health Professionals is a five-volume set that serves as a comprehensive, practical reference manual for herbalists, physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals. Dr. Jill Stansbury draws on her decades of clinical experience and her extensive research to provide an unparalleled range of herbal formulas.

Organized by body system, each volume includes hundreds of formulas to treat common health conditions, as well as formulas that address specific energetic or symptomatic presentations, including Dr. Stansbury’s own formulas, formulas from herbal folklore, and formulas from Traditional Chinese Medicine. For each formula, Dr. Stansbury offers a brief explanation of how the selected herbs address the specific condition. The book offers many sidebars and user-friendly lists—helping readers quickly choose which herbs are best for specific presentations—and details traditional uses of both western herbs and traditional Asian herbs and formulas that are readily available in the United States.

Volume II focuses on circulation and respiration, offering formulas and supporting information for treating a wide range of vascular, pulmonary, and respiratory conditions, including angina, coronary artery disease, hypertension, congestive heart failure, Reynaud’s syndrome, anemia, coughs, bronchitis, cystic fibrosis, and emphysema.

Each volume in the set also includes:

  • a discussion of how herbal therapy fits into an overall treatment plan or approach for a particular health condition
  • modern research findings on individual herbs and their mode of action in the body
  • lists of herbs that might be beneficial for specific conditions
  • advice on botanicals to avoid for particular conditions

Each chapter includes a materia medica section listing 50 or more individual herbs with tips on their properties, modes of action, and very specific symptoms each plant best addresses.

These formularies are also a tutorial for budding herbalists on the sophisticated art of fine-tuning the precision of an herbal formula for the constitution and overall health condition of an individual patient, rather than a basic diagnosis. The text aims to teach via example, helping clinicians develop their own intuition and ability to create effective herbal formulas.

Volume 1 (Digestion and Elimination) debuted the set in February 2018. Volume III (Endocrinology) will be published in fall 2018; Volumes IV (Neurology, Pyschiatry, and Pain Management) and V (Immunology, Orthopedics, and Otolarnygology) will be published in spring 2019.

Growing, Older

Growing, Older

By Joan Dye Gussow

Michael Pollan calls her one of his food heroes. Barbara Kingsolver credits her with shaping the history and politics of food in the United States. And countless others who have vied for a food revolution, pushed organics, and reawakened Americans to growing their own food and eating locally consider her both teacher and muse.Joan Gussow has influenced thousands through her books, This Organic Life and The Feeding Web, her lectures, and the simple fact that she lives what she preaches. Now in her eighties, she stops once more to pass along some wisdom-surprising, inspiring, and controversial-via the pen.

Gussow's memoir Growing, Older begins when she loses her husband of 40 years to cancer and, two weeks later, finds herself skipping down the street-much to her alarm. Why wasn't she grieving in all the normal ways? With humor and wit, she explains how she stopped worrying about why she was smiling and went on worrying, instead, and as she always has, about the possibility that the world around her was headed off a cliff. But hers is not a tale, or message, of gloom. Rather it is an affirmation of a life's work-and work in general.

Lacking a partner's assistance, Gussow continued the hard labor of growing her own year-round diet. She dealt single-handedly with a rising tidal river that regularly drowned her garden, with muskrat interlopers, broken appliances, bodily decay, and river trash-all the while bucking popular notions of how "an elderly widowed woman" ought to behave.

Scattered throughout are urgent suggestions about what growing older on a changing planet will call on all of us to do: learn self-reliance and self-restraint, yield graciously if not always happily to necessity, and-since there is no other choice-come to terms with the insistencies of the natural world. Gussow delivers another literary gem-one that women curious about aging, gardeners curious about contending with increasingly intense weather, or environmentalists curious about the future will embrace.
