If US cities are struggling to figure out how they’re going to survive when the oil runs out, they only need to take a peek at Havana, Cuba—a city that has already recovered from the sudden loss of money, jobs, food, and oil that currently threatens every major American city.
This video from the BBC’s “Around the World in 80 Gardens” highlights Havana’s recovery through organic urban food production. By filling vacant lots and open parks with growing vegetables, Havana has grown an organic culture that has sustained the city—and its 11 million people—with urban gardens.
