SAUNA ENTHUSIAST AND EXPERT BUILDER BRINGS THE JOYS OF THE FINNISH BATH INTO THE MODERN HOME
The history of the sauna stretches back at least a thousand years and traces of its existence can be found in ancient cultures from Finland to South America. With the release of the revised and expanded version of his popular book, The Sauna: A Complete Guide to the Construction, Use, and Benefits of the Finnish Bath, Rob Roy brings this age-old bathing ritual into the modern home.
The Sauna contains a complete history of the sauna—its tradition and health benefits—as well as a step-by-step guide to building a variety of saunas, including cordwood masonry and conventional wood-frame saunas. The book’s beautiful color photographs will inspire readers to build their own sauna haven. Roy has updated the appendices, providing a thorough and current listing of sauna equipment manufactures and distributors with their Web addresses.
Roy starts would-be sauna owners at the very beginning, with a discussion on choosing a site and design. He gives practical tips on obtaining permits, sauna size, and layout. A section on cordwood masonry includes detailed diagrams and photographs, making it easy for even the novice carpenter to follow. Roy lays out plans for a post-and-beam log end sauna, elegantly simple in design and construction, for the unusual earthwood (round) sauna, and for conventionally framed saunas.
More than just a how-to book, Roy injects his sense of humor and many anecdotes into his writing. “If the sauna is just a bath, than Buckingham Palace is just a house,” he comments. The book goes into detail about the Finnish culture and customs surrounding the sauna, including a list of “unwritten” rules of sauna behavior. He incorporates Finnish proverbs into his writing and provides a glossary of Finnish terms in the back of the book.
Rob Roy is the author of twelve books, including Stone Circles and Mortgage-FREE! With his wife Jaki, he founded the Earthwood Building School, where they teach cordwood masonry construction, timber framing, earth-sheltered housing, and stone circle building.
