Cancer survivors Domini Kemp and Patricia Daly offer the first comprehensive ketogenic cookbook based on the most exciting new research on nutritional approaches to the prevention and management of cancer.

For decades, the ketogenic diet—which shifts the body’s metabolism from burning glucose to burning fat, lowering blood sugar and insulin and resulting in a metabolic state known as ketosis—has been used to successfully manage pediatric epilepsy. More recently, it has been used by the Paleo community as a weight loss strategy. Now emerging research suggests that a ketogenic diet, in conjunction with conventional treatments, also offers new hope for those coping with cancer and other serious disease.

With endorsements from leading researchers and oncologists such as Dr. Thomas Seyfried (Cancer as a Metabolic Disease), The Ketogenic Kitchen offers more than 250 recipes, as well as meal plans and comprehensive scientific information about the benefits of a ketogenic diet, with sensible advice to help readers through periods of illness, recovery, and treatment.

This North American paperback edition has been updated to include U.S. customary units of measure appearing side-by-side with metric measures.

REVIEWS AND PRAISE

"Thank you so much for providing such an excellent resource. I’m sure it is going to help many, and I couldn’t recommend it more hardily. Do not get this book unless you want to get healthy.”--Dr. Joseph Mercola, founder and director, Mercola.com

“The ketogenic diet can often be overwhelming. In The Ketogenic Kitchen, Kemp and Daly provide clear explanations and fantastic recipes delivered in a passionate and personal writing style. This book removes the difficulties and makes the integration of the ketogenic diet into one’s life a rich and enjoyable process.”--Travis Christofferson, author of Tripping Over the Truth; founder and president, Single Cause Single Cure Foundation

The Ketogenic Kitchen has quickly become my favorite resource for people with cancer who are transitioning to a ketogenic plan. This book is a neat package complete with meal plans, recipes, and nutrition info. The helpful advice and personal stories are a real bonus!”--Miriam Kalamian, EdM, MS, CNS, www.dietarytherapies.com

“I awaited the release of The Ketogenic Kitchen with child-like anticipation, and it has not let me down. It is a toolbox ‘must’ for all my patients—to support and inspire them with the beautiful and delicious recipes that fill the pages. There are plenty of folks claiming to have written ketogenic cookbooks, many filled with underwhelming recipes and ‘fake food’ ingredients. The Ketogenic Kitchen focuses on real food, something harder to come by these days, as well as creative menu ideas. If you are looking to round out your cookbook collection, ketogenic or not, this book offers something for everyone.”--Dr. Nasha Winters, ND, LAc, FABNO

“There are many ‘keto’ cookbooks out there, but The Ketogenic Kitchen was specifically created for cancer patients by two people who have fought off cancer themselves. Many of the recipes were written to support the very low carbohydrate limits, which lower blood sugar and raise ketone levels quickly, an important goal for those diagnosed with cancer. This book will help so many patients and medical professionals learn how to implement the diet correctly, and it should be a standard in every oncology ward.”--Ellen Davis, MS, www.ketogenic-diet-resource.com

“Public interest in ketogenic diets for the treatment of cancer and other challenging health conditions is growing rapidly—much faster, in fact, than the availability of high quality resources people can use to apply these valuable dietary principles to their daily lives. That is precisely what makes The Ketogenic Kitchen such a timely treasure.

“Patricia Daly and Domini Kemp have written an authoritative guide that will help you put the powerful science of ketogenic principles to work in your daily life. Their hard-earned wisdom coupled with their culinary expertise set this book apart from other health-oriented cookbooks. For issues ranging from mental health disorders to diabetes to cancer, The Ketogenic Kitchen will be indispensable to those seeking to incorporate a powerful, science-based nutritional approach into their comprehensive treatment plan.”--Georgia Ede, MD, Psychiatrist and Nutrition Consultant, www.diagnosisdiet.com

The Ketogenic Kitchen is a wonderful, practical resource for the person who wants to improve their health by shifting to ketone-based metabolism. This is the cookbook that my clients and I have been waiting for!”--Dr. Mark Atkinson, MBBS, Mind–Body Medicine Physician, Cancer Recovery Advisor and Developer of the Cancer Recovery by Design Programme, www.drmarkatkinson.com

Public interest is increasing but clinical trials exploring the effect of lower-carbohydrate or ketogenic diets are slow to get off the ground, and clinical support, experience and understanding can be frustratingly hard to come by. Patricia and Domini’s book explains the precautions, the practicalities, the theories and the uncertainties and will be of value to individuals, their families and the clinicians supporting their treatment pathway. Thank you, Patricia and Domini, for your considerable endeavours in creating such an informative and deliciously practical book.”--Sue Wood, Specialist Ketogenic Dietician, Matthew’s Friends Clinics, UK

“Based on a plethora of preclinical data, trials are underway from the US to Germany. The benefits of a ketogenic diet have already been shown for weight loss and metabolic improvement, and we are hopeful that similar benefits will be seen in the cancer world. While the diet has been shown to synergise with standard therapies like radiation therapy in preclinical studies, recent studies are underway to test this in humans.

“Unable to wait for these results, many have chosen to engage in a ketogenic diet during their cancer treatment. It is our job to make sure this is done safely and effectively, and The Ketogenic Kitchen is a vital resource that we have been lacking in the clinic. This is a great source of information for both patient and physician, helping to ensure that the diet is done safely with a variety of healthy, delicious and nutrient-dense foods.”--Dr. Colin E. Champ, Assistant Professor, Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, Radiation Oncologist, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Author of Misguided Medicine, www.cavemandoctor.com

The Ketogenic Kitchen will be an invaluable resource for those wanting to follow a ketogenic diet under the direction of their medical professionals, and it will be an equally useful resource for medical professionals who want to add this to their patients’ therapeutic regime.”--Adrienne C. Scheck, PhD, Associate Professor, Neuro-Oncology Research, Barrow Brain Tumor Research Center, Barrow Neurological Institute Phoenix, AZ

Simple Food for the Good Life

Simple Food for the Good Life

By Helen Nearing

Fifty years before the phrase "simple living" became fashionable, Helen and Scott Nearing were living their celebrated "Good Life" on homesteads first in Vermont, then in Maine. All the way to their ninth decades, the Nearings grew their own food, built their own buildings, and fought an eloquent combat against the silliness of America's infatuation with consumer goods and refined foods. They also wrote or co-wrote more than thirty books, many of which are now being brought back into print by the Good Life Center and Chelsea Green.

Simple Food for the Good Life is a jovial collection of "quips, quotes, and one-of-a-kind recipes meant to amuse and intrigue all of those who find themselves in the kitchen, willingly or otherwise." Recipes such as Horse Chow, Scott's Emulsion, Crusty Carrot Croakers, Raw Beet Borscht, Creamy Blueberry Soup, and Super Salad for a Crowd should improve the mood as well as whet the appetite of any guest.

Here is an antidote for the whole foods enthusiast who is "fed up" with the anxieties and drudgeries of preparing fancy meals with stylish, expensive, hard-to-find ingredients. This celebration of salads, leftovers, raw foods, and homegrown fruits and vegetables takes the straightest imaginable route from their stem or vine to your table.

"The funniest, crankiest, most ambivalent cookbook you'll ever read," said Food & Wine magazine. "This is more than a mere cookbook," said Health Science magazine: "It belongs to the category of classics, destined to be remembered through the ages."

Among Helen Nearing's numerous books is Chelsea Green's Loving and Leaving the Good Life, a memoir of her fifty-year marriage to Scott Nearing and the story of Scott's deliberate death at the age of one hundred. Helen and Scott Nearing's final homestead in Harborside, Maine, has been established in perpetuity as an educational progam under the name of The Good Life Center.

Old Southern Apples

Old Southern Apples

By Creighton Lee Calhoun

A book that became an instant classic when it first appeared in 1995, Old Southern Apples is an indispensable reference for fruit lovers everywhere, especially those who live in the southern United States. Out of print for several years, this newly revised and expanded edition now features descriptions of some 1,800 apple varieties that either originated in the South or were widely grown there before 1928.

Author Lee Calhoun is one of the foremost figures in apple conservation in America. This masterwork reflects his knowledge and personal experience over more than thirty years, as he sought out and grew hundreds of classic apples, including both legendary varieties (like Nickajack and Magnum Bonum) and little-known ones (like Buff and Cullasaga). Representing our common orchard heritage, many of these apples are today at risk of disappearing from our national table.

Illustrated with more than 120 color images of classic apples from the National Agricultural Library’s collection of watercolor paintings, Old Southern Apples is a fascinating and beautiful reference and gift book. In addition to A-to-Z descriptions of apple varieties, both extant and extinct, Calhoun provides a brief history of apple culture in the South, and includes practical information on growing apples and on their traditional uses.

Cheesemonger

Cheesemonger

By Gordon Edgar

Witty and irreverent, informative and provocative, Cheesemonger: A Life on the Wedge is the highly readable story of Gordon Edgar's unlikely career as a cheesemonger at San Francisco's worker-owned Rainbow Grocery Cooperative. A former punk-rock political activist, Edgar bluffed his way into his cheese job knowing almost nothing, but quickly discovered a whole world of amazing artisan cheeses. There he developed a deep understanding and respect for the styles, producers, animals, and techniques that go into making great cheese.

With a refreshingly unpretentious sensibility, Edgar intertwines his own life story with his ongoing love affair with cheese, and offers readers an unflinching, highly entertaining on-the-ground look at America's growing cheese movement. From problem customers to animal rights, business ethics to taste epiphanies, this book offers something for everyone, including cheese profiles and recommendations for selecting the very best-not just the most expensive-cheeses from the United States and around the world and a look at the struggles dairy farmers face in their attempts to stay on and make their living from the land.

Edgar-a smart, progressive cheese man with an activist's edge-enlightens and delights with his view of the world from behind the cheese counter and his appreciation for the skill and tradition that go into a good wedge of Morbier.

Cheesemonger is the first book of its kind-a cheese memoir with attitude and information that will appeal to everyone from serious foodies to urban food activists.
