Sharing the Harvest

Sharing the Harvest

By Elizabeth Henderson and Robyn Van En

To an increasing number of American families the CSA (community supported agriculture) is the answer to the globalization of our food supply. The premise is simple: create a partnership between local farmers and nearby consumers, who become members or subscribers in support of the farm. In exchange for paying in advance--at the beginning of the growing season, when the farm needs financing--CSA members receive the freshest, healthiest produce throughout the season and keep money, jobs, and farms in their own community.

In this thoroughly revised and expanded edition of a Chelsea Green classic, authors Henderson and Van En provide new insight into making CSA not only a viable economic model, but the right choice for food lovers and farmers alike. Thinking and buying local is quickly moving from a novel idea to a mainstream activity. The groundbreaking first edition helped spark a movement and, with this revised edition, Sharing the Harvest is poised to lead the way toward a revitalized agriculture.

Grassfed to Finish

Grassfed to Finish

By Allan Nation

Grassfed to Finish is the first book to address all the factors necessary for a quality grassfed product. It lays a foundation of facts from Nation’s world travels, debunking the myths and misconceptions about grass-finished beef and showing that grain is totally unnecessary for a gourmet “killer” product, and actually lowers overall quality as well as nutritional character.

Nation tells how meeting grazing specialist and researcher Dr. Anibal Pordomingo in Argentina aided his understanding of the key components of an all-grass system. Nation includes Pordomingo’s production tips and innovative Forage Chain of grasses and legumes.

Chapters detail what researchers have learned about grassfed’s health benefits; how to get started with heifers and why; how to turn cull cows into gourmet products; how to integrate summer and winter annuals into a perennial-based pasture system; how to come up with a year-around supply of beef while only over-wintering cattle once; how different grasses can flavor meat; how to recognize a ready-to-harvest grass-finished beeve; how production errors can create tough meat; what educated, health-conscious consumers want and how to serve them.

The grass program explained here can be used equally well for replacement heifer development or mainstream stocker steers; however, the production and marketing foundation outlined here will serve you well if you decide to expand production and make grassfed beef your primary enterprise.

Forest Gardening in Practice

Forest Gardening in Practice

By Tomas Remiarz

A forest garden is a place where nature and people meet halfway--between the canopy of trees and the soil underfoot. It doesn’t have to look like a forest: what’s important is that natural processes are allowed to unfold, to the benefit of plants, people and other creatures. The result is an edible ecosystem. For three decades experimental forest gardens have been planted in temperate cities and rural sites, in households, neighborhoods, community gardens, parks, market gardens and plant nurseries. Forest Gardening In Practice offers an in-depth review of forest gardening with living, best practice examples. It highlights the four core skills of forest gardeners: ecology, horticulture, design, and cooperation. It is for hobby gardeners, smallholders, community gardeners and landscape professionals.

Forest Gardening In Practice features:

  • A history of forest gardening
  • A step-by-step guide to creating your own edible ecosystem
  • 14 in-depth case studies of established forest gardens and edible landscapes in Europe and the U.S.
  • Chapters on integrating animals, learning, enterprises, working in community and public settings
