WATCH: Rob Hopkins’s TED Talk: Transition to a World Without Oil

Rob Hopkins (The Transition Handbook: From oil dependency to local resilience)isn’t your run-of-the-mill environmentalist, and the Transition movement isn’t your run-of-the-mill environmentalist organization. In fact, the Transition initiative might be better understood as a philosophy for understanding the challenges human civilization will be confronting in the twenty-first century.

The philosophy posits that average global oil extraction has already peaked and is declining. In the face of this decline, humanity will need to adjust. The answer doesn’t lie in technological fixes, but in transitioning to a way of life that doesn’t rely on trucks and freight trains transporting food and other resources hundreds of miles from their points of origin. The answer lies in cultivating the resources of your specific geographical areas, strengthening local communities, and re-learning the skills of our ancestors.

In his recent TED talk, Rob Hopkins explains the Transition philosophy and begins charting a way forward for a post-peak-oil world.
