Author Nicolette Hahn Niman to Speak at Nobel Dialogue on the Future of Food
What does a former environmental lawyer and vegetarian turned cattle rancher have in common with Bob Dylan?
They’ll both be — theoretically — in Stockholm in December during the Nobel Prize ceremonies.
That’s right – Chelsea Green author Nicolette Hahn Niman will be one of several global opinion leaders and experts taking part in this year’s Nobel Week Dialogue, a daylong discussion of an important, global issue. This year’s Dialogue is focused on the future of food.
“It’s a great honor for me to be part of this dialogue, which will bring together some of the world’s finest thinkers,” Niman told Chelsea Green. “I am eager to learn from their insights. My contribution will be to highlight the unique role of cattle and other grazing animals in the world’s food system. They maintain invaluable grasslands, can improve soil biology and water holding capacity, foster carbon sequestration, and bolster biodiversity, all while their meat and milk provide uniquely nutritious food.”
The December 9th Dialogue is a free of charge, full-day event and part of the official Nobel Week program that leads up to the ceremonial awarding of the Nobel Prizes. (Yes, that means you Bob Dylan). The event in Stockholm, Sweden is, alas, sold out. “The event aims to stimulate discussion at the highest level on a topical science-related theme by bringing together Nobel Laureates, the world’s leading scientists and experts, key opinion leaders, policy makers and the general public, online as well as on site. By bridging science and society, it’s an opportunity to stimulate thinking, excite imagination and inspire greatness,” according to the Nobel Week Dialogue website.
Topics will range from a micro to macro perspective, and tackle the following questions (among others):
- How will what I put on my plate affect my health? How is our planet affected by our choices?
- Can we ensure food and nutrition for all?
- How can food be produced, supplied and consumed more sustainably?
- Will food be different in the future?
- Can we continue to eat meat?
- How do you know what’s good for you?
- What does eating mean to you?

This year’s participating Nobel Laureates are Muhammad Yunus (Peace 2006), Elizabeth H. Blackburn (Physiology or Medicine 2009), Angus Deaton (Economic Sciences 2015), Sir Richard J. Roberts (Physiology or Medicine 1993), Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard (Physiology or Medicine 1995), and Steven Chu (Physics 1997).
