A book for everyone who loves trees and woodlands, this completely revised and updated edition of Ben Law’s 2001 classic presents a range of  practical and tested alternatives to conventional woodland management. Based on years of experience, Ben clearly demonstrates how to create biodiverse, healthy environments that create secure livelihoods and yield a great variety of value added products. He also argues the case for a new approach to planning, encouraging the creation of permaculture woodlands for the benefit of the community, the local environment and the global climate.

Written from the heart by an innovative woodsman who is deeply committed to sustainability, this radical book presents an immensely practical alternative to conventional woodland management.

The Woodland Way contains:

  • Woodlands from wildwood to the 21st century;
  • The 21st century and the return of the forest dweller;
  • Woodland assessment and management planning;
  • Establishing new woodlands;
  • Management of woodlands;
  • From tree to finished product;

  • The future of woodlands.

REVIEWS AND PRAISE

"Ben’s brilliant book points the way forward for woodland management in the British Isles and beyond. It covers every aspect of what is in reality “woodland stewardship,” from both a practical and a philosophical standpoint. This book is set to be a classic and will surely mark a turning point in our relationship with woods and the natural environment."--Jean-Paul Jeanrenaud, former head of WWF International’s Forests for Life Life Programme

"Ben is a true pioneer and is, by example, quite simply creating a woodland renaissance in Britain."--Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall

Green Light at the End of the Tunnel

By Anna Edey

Heat, electricity, transportation, food, wastewater, and solid-waste management—in ways that cause near-zero harm, reduce cost of living, increase security, freedom, and quality of life.

It is becoming increasingly obvious that the way we are living is not sustainable. We perceive that our high-consumption lifestyles are contributing to ever more pollution of our air, water, and soil; ever more destruction of rain forests and mountains; more devastating hurricanes, tornadoes, flooding, and drought; and the depletion of soils and aquifers. Even our planet’s vast oceans are being degraded by overfishing, acidification from fossil fuels, and millions of tons of toxic trash.

Green Light at the End of the Tunnel contains some stunning information about the harm we caused by how we live, and some even more stunning information about solutions that are available today: truly sustainable, reliable solutions that can reduce harm and cost to nearly zero.

Anna Edey, author of Solviva, shows how homeowners can reduce by up to eighty percent the cost of electricity, driving, comfort, hot water and wastewater management, and produce or procure much of their food without the use of fossil fuels or pesticides—all while increasing food security and creating stronger local economies. It also contains fifty pages of unique Solviva designs drawn to scale and many more pages of conceptual drawings.

Holistic Orcharding with Michael Phillips (DVD)

Holistic Orcharding with Michael Phillips (DVD)

By Michael Phillips

Every farm and homestead can enjoy the timeless pleasure of a fruit orchard. Yet this can also be challenging, because few people today have the depth of knowledge and experience that’s needed to produce healthy trees and nutritious, great-tasting fruit. At the same time, both orchardists and consumers are looking to avoid spraying harmful and expensive chemicals on their trees.

The answer is to create a more holistic orchard, one that emphasizes biological health and diversity – from the microscopic fungi in the soil to the beneficial insects, companion plants, and the birds and wildlife that together form a complete and living orchard ecosystem. In other words, it’s time for us to start working with nature, rather than fighting against it.

Michael Phillips is a pioneering author and orchardist whose books include The Holistic Orchard and The Apple Grower. In this video, he leads viewers through a year in his own orchard, demonstrating basic horticultural skills like grafting and pruning, but also revealing groundbreaking and field-tested strategies for growing apples and other tree fruits not just organically, but holistically. With this information in hand, there’s now every reason to confidently plant that very first fruit tree!
