The evidence is clear: We are in the midst of a worldwide diabetes epidemic. In the United States alone, one in three Americans is either diabetic (29 million patients) or prediabetic (87 million patients), costing an annual $242 billion in medical treatments.

In Master Your Diabetes, naturopathic physician and diabetes expert Dr. Mona Morstein shows how people with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes can gain and maintain excellent control of their blood sugar levels, preventing and even reversing existing complications through education combined with medical support and encouragement. This is the first comprehensive guide for patients, caregivers, and medical practitioners to demonstrate an integrative approach based on the “eight essentials” of treatment and prevention: a low-carb diet, exercise, good sleep, stress management, healing the gut, detoxification, supplementation, and medications.

Topics covered include:

  • Important physical exams and lab work
  • Conventional diets and non-insulin medications
  • Insulin
  • Low-carb diets and how they apply to different food groups
  • Lifestyle factors, including exercise, stress management, and the microbiome
  • Diabetic supplementation
  • Pediatric diabetes

An indispensable resource, Master Your Diabetes will empower readers to take control of their condition and continue living full, active, enjoyable, and long lives.

REVIEWS AND PRAISE

“We know more about diabetes than ever in history, yet disease rates are not declining appreciably, while costs to manage the disease continue to soar. In Master Your Diabetes, Dr. Morstein draws from the best of conventional and integrative therapies to provide diabetic patients an easy-to-implement program to regain their health.”—Robb Wolf, author of Wired to Eat and The Paleo Solution

“This book is as complete a compendium on diabetes management as I have ever read. What is more, it tells the truth: ‘To be blunt, no person with T2DM should ever wind up on insulin if they follow the protocol established by an integrative physician.’ Type 2 diabetes is both preventable and in a majority of cases can be put into remission. This book is an ideal reference to understand how and why.”—Timothy Noakes, MD, PhD, emeritus professor, University of Cape Town, South Africa; founder, The Noakes Foundation

“In Master Your Diabetes, Dr. Mona Morstein covers the topic of holistic diabetes management in exceptional detail, providing real-world guidance for creating a low-carb lifestyle based on anti-inflammatory, organic, nutrient-dense foods and supportive lifestyle measures to improve blood sugar control and reduce disease risk. This comprehensive, well-written, and evidence-based book is ideal for medical and nutrition professionals, those with diabetes or prediabetes, and anyone interested in improving their overall health and vitality through healthy, low-carb living.”—Franziska Spritzler, RD, CDE

“Dr. Morstein has developed a comprehensive and unique approach to the treatment of diabetes; the information she provides is priceless.”—Dr. Jared Zeff, ND, LAc

GMO Myths and Truths

GMO Myths and Truths

By Claire Robinson and Michael Antoniou and John Fagan

It is often claimed that the case against genetically modified (GM) crops and foods is based on emotion, not science, and that to oppose GM crop and food technology is to be anti-science. It is also claimed that GM crops offer higher yields and better nutrition, that they are safe for health and the environment, that they reduce agrochemical use, and that they are needed to feed the world’s growing population. This book, co-authored by two genetic engineers and a writer/researcher, exposes these claims as false, using scientific and other documented evidence. GMO Myths and Truths summarizes the facts on the safety and efficacy of genetically modified (GM) crops and foods in terms that are accessible to the non-scientist but still relevant to scientists, policymakers and educators. The evidence presented points to many hazards, risks, and limitations of genetic engineering technology. These include harms found in animal feeding and ecological studies, which in turn indicate risks to health and the environment posed by GM crops and foods.

The layout of the book enables those readers with limited time to read the chapter summaries, while providing more detail and full references for those who require them. At 164 pages of paperback size, this new condensed version is shorter and more accessible than the authors’ 330-page report by the same name, which has been downloaded over half a million times.

The book shows that conventional breeding continues to outstrip GM in developing crops that deliver high yields, better nutrition, and tolerance to extreme weather conditions and poor soils. In agreement with over 400 international experts who co-authored a UN and World Bank-sponsored report on the future of farming, the authors conclude that modern agroecology, rather than GM, is the best path for feeding the world’s current and future populations in a safe and sustainable way.

Back in Control

Back in Control

By David Hanscom

Seattle spinal surgeon Dr. David Hanscom focuses on an aspect of chronic pain that the medical world has largely overlooked: you must calm your nervous system in order to get better. More than any other book about pain, Back in Control reveals how to quiet a turbocharged central nervous system and make a full recovery, with or without surgery. Dr. Hanscom shares the story of his own journey out of chronic pain and offers a treatment paradigm that has evolved from his personal experience, as well what he has learned from his patients,  hundreds of whom have moved beyond managing pain to becoming pain free. This book will enable those suffering from chronic pain to regain control of their care and life.

This revised 2nd edition reflects the last few years of neuroscience research. It is becoming increasingly clear that the brain processes mental and physical pain in a similar manner. As anxiety drops, pain will diminish. Dr. Hanscom has observed that these principles apply to any chronic pain condition.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Myalgic Encephalitis

Diagnosis and Treatment of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Myalgic Encephalitis

By Sarah Myhill

Mitochondria are the powerhouses of our cells, essential for the production and management of energy at the cell level. Dr. Sarah Myhill has spent years studying the relationship between mitochondrial malfunction and one of the most common problems that leads people to the doctor’s office: fatigue.

In Diagnosis and Treatment of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Myalgic Encephalitis, Dr. Myhill examines this essential role of our mitochondria in energy production and why it is key to understanding and overcoming Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) and the inflammation that often accompanies it: Myalgic Encephalitis (ME). She explains the importance of healthy mitochondria, how we can assess how well they are functioning, what we can do to keep them healthy, and how to restore them to health if problems arise.

Since publication of the first edition in 2014, new research and new clinical findings have shed further light on a condition that is debilitating to those who suffer from it, but “all in the head” to many doctors. The second edition of this groundbreaking book includes new insights and chapters on why CFS/ME is the most poorly treated condition in Western medicine, the role of the gut, allergy and autoimmunity, Lyme disease and other coinfections, reprogramming the immune system, reprogramming the brain, and the roadmap to recovery.
