DERRICK JENSEN is one of our most important public intellectuals and the internationally acclaimed author of A Language Older Than Words, The Culture of Make Believe, Listening to the Land, Strangely Like War, Welcome to the Machine, and Walking on Water. He was one of two finalists for the 2003 J. Anthony Lukas Book Prize, which cited The Culture of Make Believe as "a passionate and provocative meditation on the nexus of racism, genocide, environmental destruction, and corporate malfeasance, where civilization meets its discontents." He is an environmental activist and lives on the coast of northern California.
"Derrick Jensen is a rare and original voice of sanity in a chaotic world. He has wisdom and wit, grace and style, and is a wonderful guide to a good life beautifully lived."
—Howard Zinn, activist, author of
A People’s History of the United States
A Language Older Than Words
"A Language Older Than Words is what Franz Kafka said a book should be—an ax for the frozen sea within us. The reader should be advised that this is both high praise and sincere warning: Dangerous reading here. Proceed at your own risk."
—Daniel Quinn, author of Ishmael and The Holy
The Culture of Make Believe
"Derrick Jensen tears our illusions from us with his shocking yet graceful prose. It might numb us, but no. The Culture of Make Believe is a masterpiece. It stirs us with the excitement of being our truer selves…both breaks and mends the heart."
—Frances Moore Lappé
Walking on Water
"Mr. Jensen burns sharp holes in the dark places of those rituals we have been tricked into believing are education. Read this book!"
—John Taylor Gatto
Strangely Like War
"Strangely Like War is must reading for anyone concerned with either the fate of future generations or the planet."
—Ward Churchill
Welcome to the Machine
"Accessible, conversational in tone…subvert[s] the unapologetic, quasi-accurate rhetoric of right-wing cheerleaders."
—The Las Vegas Mercury
Listening to the Land
"Here is a book of desperate wisdom for anyone who has considered our human future and wondered: How must we live?"
—Louise Erdrich
