Knowledge Rich Ranching is not a how-to book on raising cattle. It is a book on how the cattle business works. It has not been sanitized nor edited by Ms. Rosy Scenario. It is about the way things really are. It is about fear and greed, and how the commodity business eats alive the naive and unaware. In today’s market, it is knowledge that separates the rich from the rest.

Knowledge Rich Ranching is packed with guidelines for how to read and profit from the upside-down swings of the cattle cycle. It describes various bookkeeping methods and tax tips; covers cost cutting to eliminate profit leaks; reveals the secrets of high profit grass farms and ranches; details strategies for using Management-intensive Grazing in humid and arid climates as well as during adverse weather conditions. And it explains family and business structure with suggestions for estate planning to keep today’s ranch or grass farm viable and profitable for future generations.

While focused on raising cattle, the principles in Knowledge Rich Ranching apply equally to producers of other livestock enterprises—sheep, in particular, which run backwards to the cattle cycle and can add a complementary enterprise to an existing cattle operation. Anyone who has profit as his or her goal will benefit from this book. It is the first to cover the business management principles of grassland farming and ranching.

REVIEWS AND PRAISE

"Knowledge Rich Ranching will expose you to what you need to understand when you sit down to the kitchen table on winter nights to determine how not only to make it through another year, but to develop a long-term economically sustainable farm or ranch.

From goal setting to the harsh realities of the cattle cycle, from financial planning and business structure to the successful mindset, Nation’s book brings knowledge into once convenient, concise and readable package."–David W. Morrison, Rural Papers

"Allan Nation makes an interesting declaration early in his book, Knowledge Rich Ranching.  “A basic principle of ranching,” Nation says, “is that land ownership and cattle are two separate businesses. Going out and purchasing a ranch and then buying some cows in hopes that they will pay off the note is a sure ticket to financial disaster.” Nothing equivocal about that. The rest of his book carries the same tone.

His points have been echoed by others in economic digressions but the points too often are missed or ignored. Throughout the book Nation ends each chapter section with what he labels “profit points.” Even people who don’t farm or ranch will find interesting points to think about. Most of the book is about the skills needed to run a cattle ranch, and the philosophical observations are just asides or bonuses."–Virgil Rupp, Agri-Times NW

Grassfed to Finish

Grassfed to Finish

By Allan Nation

Grassfed to Finish is the first book to address all the factors necessary for a quality grassfed product. It lays a foundation of facts from Nation’s world travels, debunking the myths and misconceptions about grass-finished beef and showing that grain is totally unnecessary for a gourmet “killer” product, and actually lowers overall quality as well as nutritional character.

Nation tells how meeting grazing specialist and researcher Dr. Anibal Pordomingo in Argentina aided his understanding of the key components of an all-grass system. Nation includes Pordomingo’s production tips and innovative Forage Chain of grasses and legumes.

Chapters detail what researchers have learned about grassfed’s health benefits; how to get started with heifers and why; how to turn cull cows into gourmet products; how to integrate summer and winter annuals into a perennial-based pasture system; how to come up with a year-around supply of beef while only over-wintering cattle once; how different grasses can flavor meat; how to recognize a ready-to-harvest grass-finished beeve; how production errors can create tough meat; what educated, health-conscious consumers want and how to serve them.

The grass program explained here can be used equally well for replacement heifer development or mainstream stocker steers; however, the production and marketing foundation outlined here will serve you well if you decide to expand production and make grassfed beef your primary enterprise.

Top-Bar Beekeeping with Les Crowder and Heather Harrell (DVD)

Top-Bar Beekeeping with Les Crowder and Heather Harrell (DVD)

By Les Crowder and Heather Harrell

In backyards and on rooftops all over the world, the top-bar hive design is revolutionizing the art and practice of beekeeping. With top-bar hives the bees naturally construct their own wax combs rather than relying on prefabricated frames of plastic cell foundation in a typical box-type hive. And top-bar hives are now being used to raise healthy bees organically, without the use of antibiotics, miticides, or other chemical inputs.

In this instructive video, New Mexico beekeeper Les Crowder shares his thirty years' experience in developing best practices for working with bees in top-bar hives. Les and Heather Harrell, authors of Top-Bar Beekeeping (Chelsea Green, 2012) discuss everything from hive management techniques to how to harvest and process honey and beeswax to the best plants to grow for the foraging bees.

The natural, low-stress methods outlined in this video are perfect for home or hobbyist beekeepers who have the time and interest that's necessary to manage bees intensively and holistically. The material will also be valuable for home orchardists, gardeners, and permaculture practitioners who are interested in bees as pollinators, as well as for their honey and beeswax.

Understanding Roots

Understanding Roots

By Robert Kourik

Award-Winner in the "Home & Garden” category of the 2015 USA Best Book Awards

Understanding Roots uncovers one of the greatest mysteries underground—the secret lives and magical workings of the roots that move and grow invisibly beneath our feet.

Roots, it seems, do more than just keep a plant from falling over: they gather water and nutrients, exude wondrous elixirs to create good soil, make friends with microbes and fungi, communicate with other roots, and adapt themselves to all manner of soils, winds, and climates, nourishing and sustaining our gardens, lawns, and woodlands.

Understanding Roots contains over 115 enchanting and revealing root drawings that most people have never seen, from prairies, grasslands, and deserts, as well as drawings based on excavations of vegetable, fruit, nut, and ornamental tree roots. Every root system presented in this book was drawn by people literally working in the trenches, sketching the roots where they grew.

The text provides a verydetailed review of all aspects of transplanting; describes how roots work their magic to improve soil nutrients; investigates the hidden life of soil microbes and their mysterious relationship to roots; explores the question of whether deep roots really gather more unique nutrients than shallow roots; shares the latest research about the mysteries of mycorrhizal (good fungal) association; shows you exactly where to put your fertilizer, compost, water, and mulch to help plants flourish; tells you why gray water increases crop yields more than fresh water; and, most importantly, reveals the science behind all the above (with citations for each scientific paper).

This book contains at least eighty percent more new information, more results of the latest in-depth and up-to-date explorations, and even more helpful guidelines on roots than the author’s previous book (Roots Demystified: Change Your Garden Habits to Help Roots Thrive). This is not a revised edition—it’s a whole new stand-alone book.
