Cry for one, try to save the rest.
These are the words of marine biologist Riki Ott, comforting an oil spill cleanup worker who has lost an animal to the devastation. In this video, Riki Ott presents a multimedia slideshow recounting her firsthand experiences studying the Exxon Valdez oil spill and its effects. Twenty years later, only a handful of species have fully recovered. Half the oil remains buried about a foot beneath the beach’s sand. And the community’s trauma is immeasurable.
Riki Ott is the author of Not One Drop: Betrayal and Courage in the Wake of the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill.
