Surprise! US Leads World in Wind Energy Production
Posted By admin On August 15, 2008 @ 11:46 pm In Renewable Energy | No Comments
Due to our land area advantage, strong winds, and newer, more efficient turbines, the US has overtaken Germany as the world’s largest producer of wind energy in terms of megawatts produced. This is a great step in the right direction, and being the world-leader in wind energy production could do a (very) little damage control for the US’s energy-hog image around the world.
Germany has the capacity to produce up to 23,000 megawatts of power. The US only has a capacity of 18,000 megawatts. However, the strong winds across our landscape (especially Texas) make our fewer wind turbines more productive. Also, Germany’s wind energy also accounts for 7% of the country’s total energy usage, while our wind energy only accounts for 1.2%. Denmark, by comparison, gets 20% of its power from wind.
So we still have room for improvement, especially in the area of power transmission. It would be shame to generate the world’s most wind energy, only to lose more than half of it to inefficiencies in transmission.
