After ending his academic career and returning to farming in the late 60’s, farmer and activist Will Allen made a couple of important discoveries: 1. You don’t need to use pesticides to be a successful commercial farmer, and 2. you don’t have to hide your secrets and tricks of the trade from your fellow farmers: you can sit down and swap knowledge over a cup of coffee.

The principles of a toxin-free food system and this spirit of cooperation guided his farming career, led to semi-regular speaking gigs on the anti-pesticide lecture circuit, and ultimately to his book, The War on Bugs.

In this podcast interview, Will Allen talks to Rob Williams of Free Vermont Radio about what it was like to be a teacher-agitator at a California University in the 60’s, and what it meant to grow organic before the existence of capital-O Organic certification.
