Howard Dean took to the airwaves Thursday to take on health care reform in general, the Max Baucus plan in particular, the public option, and his book, Howard Dean’s Prescription for Real Healthcare Reform: How We Can Achieve Affordable Medical Care for Every American and Make Our Jobs Safer.

In this expansive hour-long interview from New Hampshire Public Radio, the former Vermont Governor, former head of the Democratic National Committee, presidential candidate, and physician compares our wacked-out system to successful health care systems in other countries—such as the Netherlands, where private insurers work hand in hand with government, but are as highly regulated as public utilities—explains the benefits and political drawbacks of a single-payer system, and takes a look at feasible ways to pay for real reform that would bring insurance to the uninsured and bring choice and competition to the insurance marketplace. The key to real reform is the public option, and it must not be negotiated away.
