LISTEN: Eliot Coleman Explains How to Farm in All Climates

Of course you can’t grow vegetables outdoors year-round; especially not in Maine! Right?

Well, Eliot Coleman (The Winter Harvest Handbook: Year-Round Vegetable Production Using Deep Organic Techniques and Unheated Greenhouses) was just too stubborn to accept that. To extend the growing season, he first employed the tried-and-true method of cold frame gardening. That got some pretty good results. Next, he tried a high hoop-house. That was all right.

But Eliot’s eureka moment came when he put the cold frame inside the hoop-house. That one action was like moving the garden 500 miles south: from Maine to Georgia. And as far as overnight freezing went, well, he just planted vegetables that didn’t mind the occasional freeze and thaw.

Eliot talked about his experiences over his 30 years of farming with Heritage Radio Network’s Kate Manchester, his newest book, and shared his gardening secrets.
