So I'm an avid mushroom hunter and have never tried to grow mushrooms at home. I've been reading for day's now on the methods and techniques on how to do it and seems like you have to be a professor in biology to have any success? Oyster mushrooms are my favorite and I have heard the more easier ones to grow at home. So, I'm going to attempt it. I have three question's if anyone can answer them for me? 1. Can I use/add 'plug spawn' to my medium? Will it work? 2. Do i need to sterilize my containers I use to put the final medium mix in, such as a milk container? 3. About how long should I wait until I think that there's enough mycelium to do the next step and that is refrigerating the the carton to promote fruiting? Thank you to anyone that can help me. Newbie home grower here, veteran hunter out their (the woods!)

Don't sterilize it, that's a bad idea. Pasturization is what you want to do. Heat your material (straw, or wood) at 190 degrees fahrenheit for about 1.5 hours. Sterilizing is pointless, especially since you're about to poke holes in the carton, and allowing other fungus or bacteria to grow without any natural competition (wood and grass naturally have antifungal and antibiotic properties to prevent disease, when you sterilize, it kills these off)

So, pasturize and this is great. You can get nonchlorinated water by leaving water out for 24 hours. It evaporates.

If you just boiled the growing medium, do you still need to wet it down with more water? Can you use water that you've left out overnight to let the chlorine evaporate? Or boil it to get rid of the chlorine? Coffee grounds--fresh or brewed? And, most important, would this work with little pieces of fresh, mature oyster mushrooms (or would they just rot)?
