On the 15th day of a fast that will go from 25–40 days, nine people around the country called for action by the American people to pressure their Congresspeople and the members of the House Energy and Commerce Committee for legislation on climate and energy that is to the scale of the climate emergency that we are in.
Elliott Adams, past president of Veterans for Peace and former infantry paratrooper, explained why he was committed to continue fasting: “I am concerned that a lack of action will exacerbate and deepen conflicts and lead to wars around the world. Without legislation that makes substantial reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, we are facing a future of fights over scarce resources like water, massive refugee movements and disruption of our food systems. The United States, as the country responsible for the highest percentage of the carbon pollution in our atmosphere, has a responsibility to lead by example to make a dramatic turn away from fossil fuels to renewables and efficiency.”
Cathy Luna-Desaulnier, a 38 year old mother of two and a homeowner from the small town of Smithville, Texas, stated that, “It’s not easy to go many weeks without food, and I’ve never none something like this before, but I believe in standing up proud and tall for the right causes. If there was ever a right cause, the cause of preserving our environment for my children and grandchildren is it.”
Fasters are calling upon Congress to pass legislation that mandates a definite 25-40% (1990 baseline) or more decrease in greenhouse gas emissions, a moratorium on the building of any new coal plants and no giveaways to polluters. 100% of permits to pollute must be auctioned, as President Obama supports, or a substantial carbon fee must be enacted.
