CSA: Cincinnati Supported Agriculture

Not strictly limited to Cincinnati, of course, but it’s nice to see a major newspaper revealing the news of CSA coolness.

…CSA is a farm management/marketing concept in which growers and consumers share the risks and benefits of food production.

“Buying fresh, locally grown food in season supports family farms instead of corporate agriculture,” Craig Harkrider said. “It also keeps food dollars local, with a large multiplying effect in the local economy.”

An estimated 30,000 to 50,000 consumers nationwide rely on CSA arrangements for the majority of their produce, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The Harkriders have 13 members in their CSA operation. Each has pledged $550 in exchange for a weekly supply of fresh vegetables and flowers from May through October.

“I like what Craig is doing. I like his philosophy (sustainable farming), and I like to have food that doesn’t have pesticides on it,” said member Ken Wilson of Reily Township in Butler County….
