America Can’t Wait for Real Health Care Reform—Sign the Petition

We keep hearing that we need 60 votes in the Senate to pass health care reform with a strong public option. Of course, this isn’t true. Legislation passes in the Senate with a majority vote. When Republicans were the majority, they passed legislation with fewer than 60 votes all the time. So what’s the big deal about 60 votes?

Sixty votes are needed to block a filibuster. In other words, if the opposition mounts a filibuster, a number of Democrats will have to stand up and say, “No, I will not block this filibuster so that we can send this piece of legislation to the floor for a vote.” And if conservative Democrats want to do this, by God, we should give them the chance to show their true colors.

Democracy for America needs your help to force Congress to get the job done and pass real health care reform.

Now is the season for action. The majority of Americans want health insurance reform with the choice of a public option that keeps insurance companies honest, lowers costs, and increases service.

The choice of a public option provides every American a non-profit health insurance alternative that can’t be canceled if you lose a job or move and its inclusion in any bill passed this year is non-negotiable.

Majority votes in Congress can pass a public option.

We join President Obama in calling on Congress to get the job done.
