So glad to see articles like this. More people should be thinking about the win-win situation of growing or picking your own.

Not only are you keeping the money in the community by supporting your local farmer, but your food is traceable. You know where it has come from and under what conditions it has been grown.

It's fresh because it hasn't flown half way around the world to get there, and as a result not only have you helped reduce the carbon footprint, you are eating fruit and vegetables that are packed with vitamins because you are eating produce which was picked that day.

Buy local, eat fresh!

I found my farm! Yesterday I picked several varieties of lettuce, spinach and asparagus, and a dozen eggs layed by chickens that roam freely, eat plenty of greens and insects. The farmer even gave me a 1/2 gallon of colustrum to feed to my dogs, who happily lap it up.

I consider myself very fortunate to have this opportunity to pick fresh from the producer. I trust that what I am getting is pesticide free and wholesome.

Meet Booker T. Whatley, who worked out a strategy whereby anyone who owns 5 acres within an hour's drive of a city can prosper with a Pick-Your-Own farm! (Soon that driving distance may have to be closer, unfortunately.)

I think I heard somewhere that if your freezer is full (some people save their food scraps, freeze them and then take them to the Green market and dump them in exchange for some great soil) that it uses less electricity? Check it out? Blueberries, washed and frozen in bags?
Great piece, blueberries are full of antioxidents! Great for smoothies? Did you say tht?
