Video: T. Boone Pickens and His Push for the Future
Thomas Boone Pickens is a billionaire and former oil-man who is out to save the country. He’s now 80 years old, but is showing courage and leadership on energy innovation that belies his age. Pickens has put together a plan to ween America of foreign oil in 10 years—a plan toward which Senator Obama tipped his hat in his nomination speech
Pickens has a straightforward manner about him. He’s an old cowboy, after all. He’s also got a straightforward approach to solving our foreign oil problem: power our cars with American natural gas, and replace our natural gas electricity generation with wind power. True to form, he’s called this approach “The Pickens Plan.”
Here’s T. Boone explaining his idea:
His plan sounds simple enough. But what’s involved logistically? All our vehicles run on gasoline or diesel fuel. Are we all supposed to invest the $8,000 to $20,000 to convert our vehicle to compressed natural gas? I’m, of course, willing to load up my credit cards again if it means helping the country ween itself off oil, but I don’t expect many other people to feel this way. Does this make it an impossibility without a government-sponsored conversion program? Or, better yet, a T. Boone Pickens-sponsored conversion program?
Do we use eminent domain to take over the fields required for turbine farms?
I’m all for the wind development in America’s mid-west. But why not build wind at break-neck speed and roll out electric vehicles at the same time? Another nitpick: T. Boone’s American energy resource list does not include geothermal.
