Two old white men with something worthwhile to say

The Mouse Rogue Elephants Fear by Aldo Vidali Monday, February 27, 2006 Someone sent me a striking cartoon symbolizing the suicidal blindness of liberals. It shows a medieval army about to go into battle, with archers, cavalry, and infantry ready for the pompous commander’s orders. Across the field stands a vast enemy force, outnumbering the little army 10 to 1. A merchant cart displaying a new weapon is in the foreground. The merchant is pointing to the deadly weapon: a modern 50 caliber machine gun with a long cartridge belt mounted and ready to fire. Without turning to look or bothering to listen, the commander waves the merchant away: “Not now! Not now! I’ve got a war to fight!”… …Today liberals no longer listen to Jefferson, Franklin, Lincoln, Eisenhower, Kennedy, and the rest of the great progressives. That is why we lost our country to scheming pseudo-Christians and fascists. I know a fascist when I see one. I was raised under Mussolini. So was my mentor and friend Federico Fellini. Fifty years ago his satirical cinema pulverized fascist and rightwing Catholic mentality with powerful cine-magic that wiped out centuries of oppressive indoctrination for millions. American democracy’s final battle is imminent. A frightening weapon is needed to defeat fascism, like the proverbial mouse that elephants fear. Two years ago a brilliant Berkeley professor, George Lakoff, wrote a little book titled: Don’t think of an elephant. In a few months it became a bestseller. If Lakoff’s ideas were widely understood, progressive action could, in a few months, collapse the massive framework of cultural corruption that took more than 35 years for conservative think tanks to erect. How is it possible to erase years of deceit in a few months? The answer is surprisingly simple. What takes years to build can be demolished with a wrecking ball in a single day. This short article tells where a powerful wrecking ball is being assembled so that progressive leaders can collapse the thieving conservative structure of lies. We all know how exposing a single dishonest act can destroy a reputation built over a lifetime. Rogue elephants that took decades to inflate with hot air can be popped with a single arrow by piercing their soft underbelly. Fellini was a unique film author whose reputation is so colossal that his name is even recognized by people who never saw his films. The grandiose closing ceremony of the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino celebrated his joyous style. Fellini’s films changed human and social awareness so deeply that even language has been affected. Whether showing the dumb brutality of fascists, unmasking the holier-that-thou stupidity of fake Christians, or disrobing the mindless greed of materialists, in the end Fellini’s marvelous creations lifted hearts with humor and compassion that humanized society. Lakoff is a master of linguistics. Maestro Fellini created a cine-magic of unforgettable visual frames. Unite these two and you set a chemical reaction similar to the mixing of nitro and glycerin that results in the devastating force of dynamite. The irresistible weapon needed to bring down conservative corruption is now in production. It is a Fellini-style movie in three parts titled: Deflating the Elephant. It is a mighty weapon that — if progressive leaders take the time to turn around, see it, understand it, support it in every possible way, and use it in the coming battle for democracy — will flush all the smelly, saran-wrapped turds out of our derelict Congress (journalist P.J. O’Rourke rightly described Congress “a parliament of whores”) and fumigate the White House thereafter. Real patriots — those with enough spine to boldly defend the Constitution — need only see the film’s 20-minute introduction featuring Sean Penn. The Future Is Hopeless, So Give it Your All

The never-ending national election in the United States, the “surprise” pro-Brexit vote in the United Kingdom, climate change … the list goes on and on about how easy it can be to lose hope in the future.Like many of life’s frustrations, or overwhelmingly large topics, most people in our society find themselves somewhere on the […] Read More

How Carbon Farming Can Save the Planet

Carbon farming alone is not enough to avoid catastrophic climate change, but coupled with new economic priorities, a massive switch to clean energy, and big changes to much of the rest of the way our societies work, it offers a pathway out of destruction and a route to hope.Along the way carbon farming can also […] Read More

Look Under Your Feet for Global Soil-utions

For several years, Chelsea Green has been publishing books that look under our feet for solutions to some of the most vexing problems facing the planet – hunger, drought, degraded farmland and grasslands, damaged waterways, and much more. Those books focus on (mostly) one thing: Soil.  In 2016, we’ve published two more important books that […] Read More

Climate Change & the End of Stationarity

Just as predicting the rise of Donald Trump as a leading presidential candidate stumped even the best of political analysts (looking at you Nate “FiveThirtyEight” Silver), the advent of the Sixth Great Extinction due to climate change and an increasingly potent mix of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has completely upended how we predict the […] Read More

Use Simple Games to Better Understand Climate Change

How is it that emissions keep growing despite rising concern about the climate change they cause? It is possible to identify several reasons for the paradox, most of which lie outside the scope of The Climate Change Playbook. But one important reason is relevant here: people do not understand the behaviors of the climate system. And […] Read More
