The "Lyme Wars," as herbalist and psychotherapist Buhner (The Lost Language of Plants) describes them, rage on today, with physicians, researchers, and the general public still flummoxed by the bacterial Borrelia spirochete. While vaccines come and go, and treatment regimens compete in terms of efficacy and reliability, Buhner adds to the field with this herbal alternative and complementary route to the prevention, management, and treatment of Lyme disease. Perhaps more important, he adds clarity and levelheaded analysis to the fray. He begins with a summary of what we know to date and the media's incongruous messages before detailing the startling complexities of the Borrelia life cycle and noting the various symptoms, diagnostic tests, and common antibiotic treatment regimens associated with Lyme disease. Finally, he introduces an herbal protocol for the disease's prevention. Although Buhner would have made an even more compelling argument had he presented the results of the application of that protocol to existing patients, his sincerity is apparent and his writing superb. Written for consumers and professionals, with some highly technical material accompanying more lay-oriented portions, this book is recommended for most libraries.
